About Umrah

General Information

Our beloved Prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) said: “The performance of Umrah is an expiation for the sins, committed between this Umrah & the previous one; and the reward of the Hajj Mabrur (i.e. accepted) is nothing but Jannah”. (Narrated by Al Bukhari & Muslim).

The Fundamental Rites of Umrah:

  1. Get into the state of Ihram & declare the intention to perform Umrah
  2. Perform the Tawaaf (ceremony of going around the Holy Kaaba)
  3. Perform The Sayie (ceremony of hastening between the hills of Safa & Marwa)

The Compulsory Acts of Umrah:

  1. Get into the state of Ihram from Miqat
  2. Shaving or trimming hair after completing The Sayie.

Visiting The Prophet’s Mosque (Al Masjid Al Nabawi)

  • Ablution is compulsory prior to prayers & visits.
  • It is Sunnah to go to Madinah, at any convenient time, before or after the Umrah, with the intention of visiting the Prophet’s mosque & praying in it. Prayers performed in this mosque are rewarded a thousand fold over prayers observed in any other mosques, with the exception of the Sacred Mosque, according to the Hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
  • When you enter the Prophet’s mosque, enter with your right foot first, saying “In the name of Allah (God), the most gracious & the most merciful”, invoking blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) & ask Allah (God) to open the doors of his mercy to you.
  • The recommended words for entering any mosque, including the Prophet’s mosque are: “I seek refuge in Allah (God), the Almighty, in His noble countenance and in His eternal power, from Satan the rejected one. Allah (God), open to me the doors of your mercy”.
  • Perform the prayer (two units) of the mosque’s greetings.
  • It is preferable to have this prayer in the area between the Prophet’s grave & his pulpit (Al Rawda). Otherwise, you can pray in any place in the mosque.
  • Go to the tomb of the Prophet (peace be upon him), stand in front of it, uttering reverently in a low voice: “Peace be upon you & may Allah (God) shower you with His mercy & blessings. May Allah (God) reward you, on behalf of your people, with the best of rewards”.
  • Head towards the grave of Abu Bakr & say: “Peace be upon you Abu Bakr, the successor of Allah (God)’s Prophet (peace be upon him) and may Allah (God) shower you with His mercy & blessings. May Allah (God) be pleased with you & may He reward you, on behalf of Mohamed’s people, with good rewards”.
  • Head towards the grave of Omar Ibn El Khatab & say: “Peace be upon you Omar, the Commander of The Faithful & may Allah (God) shower you with His mercy & blessings. May Allah (God) be pleased with you & may He reward you, on behalf of Mohamed’s people, with good rewards”.
  • It is Sunnah to visit the Quba mosque & pray in it as the Prophet (peace be upon him) did.
  • It is Sunnah to visit the graveyard of Al Baqi, Osman & Hamza (May Allah be pleased with them) & the martyrs of the Uhud battle, to greet them & to pray for them, where you say: “Peace be upon you, believers & Muslims, and we will Insha’Allah join you. We ask Allah (God) to grant wellness to all of us”.
  • It should be noted that:
    • There is no connection between the visit of the Prophet’s mosque & the Hajj performance. If you perform Hajj without visiting the Prophet’s mosque, your Hajj is correct.
    • There is neither Ihram nor related sayings (Talbiyah) for visiting the Prophet’s mosque.

The Mehrem Concern

  • The law of Saudi Arabia requires that every female, travelling to any Saudi Arabia territories, must be accompanied by a Mehrem (first degree relative, i.e. father or husband or son or brother or uncle).
  • The female traveller must submit the following document/s:
  • If the husband is the Mehrem, a copy of their marriage certificate must be submitted
  • If the brother is the Mehrem, a copy of his and her birth certificates must be submitted
  • If the son is the Mehrem, a copy of his and her birth certificates must be submitted
  • If the uncle is the Mehrem, a copy of his and her birth certificates must be submitted
  • If a lady is 45 years old or above at the time of travel to Umrah, she can go to Umrah, organized by a travel agency & accompanied by a group of ladies
